On May 8, 2025, Deutsche Post issued a postage stamp, "National Archaeological Discoveries", as part of the annual project "Europe".

The stamp is dedicated to one of the most important archaeological sites in Germany: the Swabian Alb caves. This mountain range in southern Germany (in Baden-Württemberg) has given the world sensational archaeological finds. In the Vogelherd, Hohle Fels and several other caves, more than 50 figurines carved from mammoth tusks dating back to the Late Paleolithic period were discovered. The ancient people who lived in these caves about 40,000 years ago were already creating bone images of people and animals: mammoths, cave lions, bison, wild horses and others. These figurines are the oldest examples of decorative art. Similar older objects have not been found anywhere in the world. In July 2017, UNESCO designated six caves with their surrounding landscapes and artefacts found in them as World Heritage Sites under the name "Caves and Ice Age Art of the Swabian Alb".

It is these ancient art objects that were depicted by German artist Sandra Hoffmann Robbiani on a postage stamp. The stamp itself features a female figurine, a wild horse, a bird and a bone flute, with other animals and artefacts on the margins of the stamp sheet.

Professor Hoffmann Robbiani is known for her work in graphic design and postal miniatures. She successfully collaborates with the postal authorities of Germany, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. To create the sketches for the stamp, the artist carried out painstaking work, studying original artefacts located in several German museums.

For example, the figurine of a wild horse is kept in the Museum of the University of Tübingen. It was discovered in the Vogelherdhöhle cave near Stuttgart. The excavations in this cave, conducted in 1931 by archaeologist Gustav Riek, became a sensation. It was then that most of the famous bone figurines were found, including this horse.

The horse figurine was carved from mammoth tusk, its size is just under 5 cm. The figurine has been preserved almost completely, which is a rarity for artifacts of this age. The ancient master created a laconic, but at the same time incredibly accurate image of a wild horse. He managed to convey all the characteristic features of the animal: a compact streamlined body, a muscular curved neck and a small head with pointed ears. If you look closely, you can even see such expressive details as the mouth, flared nostrils, eyes and short protruding mane - typical of the tarpan. The Vogelherd Horse is the oldest sculpture of a horse in the world, created by man about 35 thousand years ago. It is with it that the centuries-old history of worship of the beauty and strength of these amazing animals begins.

The official presentation of the postage stamp took place on May 8, 2025 in the city of Blaubeuren, not far from the famous caves. The ceremony was attended by representatives of the German Post, archaeologists from the University of Tübingen and local authorities.

Modest in size, but grandiose in content, the stamp became a real bridge across millennia. It reminded that the feeling of admiration for horses is timeless, it was experienced equally by our contemporaries and people of the Stone Age.
