Europe 2025. National Archaeological Discoveries

On May 8, 2025, German Post issued a postage stamp, "National Archaeological Discoveries", as part of the annual project "Europe".

The stamp is dedicated to one of the most important archaeological sites in Germany: the caves of the Swabian Alb.

In the caves of Vogelherd, Hohle Fels and several others, more than 50 figurines carved from mammoth ivory, dating back to the late Paleolithic period, were discovered. The ancient people who lived in these caves about 40,000 years ago already created images of people and animals from bone: mammoths, cave lions, bison, wild horses and others.

The Vogelherd Horse is the oldest sculpture of a horse in the world, created by man approximately 35 thousand years ago.
